Transfiguration Sunday

I had lunch today with my mentor.  He was recalling his ordination - some 65 years ago.

He said the message was about transfiguring moments.  The preacher for the service of ordination acknowledged the trek of seven years that had led to the pinnacle of the moment.  The evening was for him a high point of celebration and glorious fruition.  It was right and proper to stand grateful and tall in the illuminating presence of God's call to ordained ministry.

However, for the next 65 years the place of ministry was in the earthly trenches where the heart of God beat in the needs of all of God's creation.

My mentor said "it wasn't that there weren't glimpses of that spectacular moment so long ago.  It is that I knew I needed to be where my hands, feet, my mind, my body and all that I had would serve.
That is how I could truly be with Christ, not by clinging to the glorious joy of ordination."

The heart of ministry is here on earth
