Reading the scripture lessons for this week reveals the quality of care Christ calls us to offer. Jesus leads us, not like some cheerleader or Pied Piper....but by showing us first "how" to serve.
As Jesus wandered through town and country, he responded to all degrees of human pain. He met doubt, fear and skepticism with teaching and example. He stepped toward intimate relationships with even the most ill, sinful, or possessed people. Hearing cries for healing, sensing the yearning or seeing the wounds of people, Jesus extended unconditionally the promise of New Life through faith. He was responsive...energetic...and precise. In his presence, the smallest spark of faith was recognized as the doorway to freedom and abundant life. He stopped at absolutely nothing to establish the "other" in a state of health and hope.
Look back at this past week. Reflect upon the invitations you have received to serve others. How have you responded? What situations seemed impossible? What people made you shy away? When did someone else's yearning or pain threaten to sap your resources? How did you allow Christ to companion you in those situations? What happened?
