Miracles

In the recent weeks, I have participated in several conversations about "miracles".

One person said that a miracle had occurred in a very ordinary place under quite mundane circumstances. It wasn't even seen as a miracle at the moment it happened -- it wasn't until the day was being savored that the event's amazing power was fully appreciated. I was told that as the mind was reviewing the event it was as if God was ever so gently turning the chin towards a different angle, tilting the mind's eye upwards (like when a lover adjusts the face of the beloved to offer a gentle kiss). Suddenly the beauty and lasting value of the moment was revealed! Words and actions that seemed small, even insignificant were shown to be grace-filled touch points -- moments when God's love was seeping into and through human existence. The power of the experience continues to reverberate with love and awe-filled gratitude.

Wow...one can't help but wonder how many of Christ's miracles go unnoticed by the people being invited by the Holy Spirit to "see" and "hear" in ways that will draw them deeper into the heart of comfort and healing. Miracles point to God's presence -- and they are "seen" as miracles when what is noticed transcends or even defies human reason or expectation. Christ's miracles always leave aftershocks of wholeness and wellness that lead the witnesses and recipients closer to God.

Look at your experiences -- reflect upon them prayerfully -- if you noticed a miracle as it occurred, wonderful!

However, if you missed the miraculous aspect in the midst of the moment, savor it now -- allow your attention to be drawn through the things you remember about the event to the ripple effects it generates. You may see that the event moved you to a deeper closeness with God or another person with whom there had been previous distance or brokenness. As you look back at some experiences you may find that you can't fully understand or even remember HOW you made it through the moment. Perhaps you have experienced incredible peace in the presence of a dire situation. Maybe as you reflect upon something you will see that some tectonic plate of rigidity or prejudice has been nudged or even dramatically moved.

You have been witness to a miracle!
