"God, what is it that you want me to let go of this Lent? Is it other than what I think" (Starter prayer from Wondrous Encounters)
Today's readings from Isaiah 58:9b-14 and Luke 5: 27-32 remind me that God's people have always had an amazing capacity for missing the point. We all have our "way" of interpreting God's counsel. It seems that once we decide on a course of action (our plan) we carry on without pausing to ask God again, and again and again -- am I getting the point? We keep thinking about our decision (which may not be the point) rather than continuing to pray for God's take on the options facing us (which is the point.)
My imagination is taking hold here: How do I get the point? Is the point the truth? or is the point the direction? Either way I can only get the point if I am paying attention openly, with a willingness to learn and, if necessary, change. Sometimes I prefer to ignore the point. Sad, but true.
