Tuesday, Fourth Week of Lent

Enough Light to Take the Next Step

Nouwen said:  "The art of living is to enjoy what we can see and not complain about what remains in the dark."

Whether you are a visionary or a practical minded detail person one fact remains:  you can only occupy one moment in time.  Also, you only need firm solid footing that is large enough to support one foot at a time, one step at a time.   As long as you have total balance you can walk confidently from one stepping stone to the next.  As long as you have unwavering faith that as you leave each stopping point another one, equally solid, will appear, you have no worries. (Remember the scene in Indiana Jones when the bridge over the chasm didn't appear until Indiana took a step into the void indicating his trust that the rock bridge would appear?)

Perhaps one of the reasons we are inclined to ask for more light than necessary is that we fear the unknown. Somehow knowing what surrounds us gives us a sense of control.  We may feel more prepared if we know just a bit more about what may come our way.

Yet all we REALLY need to know is where to place our feet securely NOW and that our balance is secure.  Our faith keeps us rooted and centered in Christ so that we can walk confidently through time and space.

Prayer:  Gracious God, I know that you will show me what I need to know to pass safely through the day.  Forgive me for my "need to know" more than you are revealing right now.
