Thursday, Third Week of Lent

Emotional Life May Control Spiritual Life

I don't know of anybody who is immune to the rhythms of the emotional life.  We have all sorts of quips and quotes that refer to the moodiness that can influence our behavior.  To name a few:

"I got up on the wrong side of the bed."   "I guess I am just having a bad hair day."  or  "Today I am walking on air."  or "Today I just need to sow some wild oats."

You get the picture.  Emotions will be one lens through which we view the world (remember those rose colored glasses?)

Emotions can also influence how we approach God:  guilt, shame, embarrassment, rage, fear can all make us avoid prayer altogether.

Then, over time we may be defined by the emotions and controlled by them.  We become known as an angry person, a fearful person (or as a cheery person).

God invites us to be known first as a faithful person -- who has feelings of all sorts, but whose life and relationships are not dictated by those feelings.

Prayer:  Help me stay focused upon you, oh God, so that my emotions do not dictate my words and deeds.
