Sunday, Fifth Week of Lent

Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it in eternal life. John 12:25

This would not be the way a motivational speaker would begin a speech.  Rotten tomatoes might be tossed immediately from a crowd waiting to hear about the keys to success.

Yet time and time again the children of God are reminded that it is only in our moments of greatest weakness that we can experience the magnitude of God's dreams for us.

I think of these words from Fr. Stuhlmueller:

It seems that when we have done our best, that best must collapse so that God's dreams for us may be fulfilled

It was true for Jesus.  Ultimately he had to surrender his life as he knew it, including all of his friends and any of the hopes he may have had as a man, so that the power of God could establish Christ (and all of us) in eternity.

So if it was true for Jesus, and if we are following Jesus.......then.....  yep, you've got it!

From Nouwen's Devotional:   Which of your daily routines or personal preferences reveal that you are trying to secure your own life?  Which reveal a willingness to "collapse"?
