Sunday, Second Week of Lent

Prayer and Solitude Help Us Listen to God

Do you remember the days before automatic fine tuning on radios?  It was often necessary to adjust the station to remove static before you could receive the clearest signal.

Likewise, we need to adjust our focus to remove exterior and interior static so that we can receive God's message.  As Nouwen says, most of us walk daily in the midst of many and various voices telling us about our needs and our weaknesses.  Those voices have a volume and a frequency that can deflect our attention from the one message we most need to hear.

God says:  You are mine.  You are precious to me, and I love you.

                                          (from Pamela's sketch book)

Prayer and an intentional practice of solitude help us to fine tune our interior space.  When we say "not now" to the voices that compete with our desire for peace we are saying "yes" to God's still small voice.

Where are the places or situations that provide you with the quiet solitude for prayer?  Do you need to return to them more frequently?

Prayer:  O God, show me the way to the quiet and peace where I can hear your voice.
