Wisdom

My spiritual director is wise. I rarely see her in any context other than our regular spiritual direction sessions. She has seen me "out and about" only a few times -- She both knows me profoundly and not at all. As with most skilled spiritual directors, she listens to whatever I bring...I offer my description of what I have noticed in any given month that seems to be a manifestation of God's action. No surprise, she patiently receives my words....and then leans into the moments when I describe a conversation that pricks me a bit...

"Ah... here is where you have an opportunity to learn, Pamela...."

She has a way of recognizing the places of my situations and relationships where I am being "rebuked" ... where I am bumping up against a truth presented or spoken to me that will promote fullness of life, even though I may be trying, initially, to ignore it.

When I read today's assigned reading from Proverbs, I immediately remembered the many opportunities given to me to hear wisdom calling. Sometimes I accept those opportunities willingly...but there are other times when I prickle a bit...and I attempt to avoid or discount what I know in the pit of my stomach I most need to hear (or see).

When I trust God's knowledge of my intentions, I respond more freely to situations or comments that challenge my tendency to set my own course (based upon some sense that I know what is best). In faith I am guided through the streets of my heart and mind...through selfish desires, doubts and fears that may draw me to a path of my own folly.

So here's wisdom.... We are always being drawn towards "abundance". God's lavish feast of rich life is set. It is freely given, constantly available... and God's voice is constantly speaking the words that guide us to our place.

Listen.... and if you have difficulty hearing it yourself, who might be able to assist you? How is Jesus providing a reliable hearing assistance device? Who or where is the point where God's wisdom is intersecting with your choices?
