Yesterday I listened to a program on National Public Radio (hosted by Diane Rehm) about the power of meditation. The interdisciplinary panel discussed the life changing benefits of meditation...and described the many ways that the world of science is trying to measure the physiological, biochemical and neurological changes that evolve in a person who practices mindfulness. Stress reduction, clarity of focus, and ability to function effectively in chaotic situations are some of cumulative and long term results.
I couldn't help but chuckle when one of the panelists descibed this work as "ground breaking"... The process of measuring, quantifying and documenting the results of meditation may be "new" to the world of scientific research...but for the people of faith, generation upon generation have known and trusted the power of lingering in the space where stillness and truth prevail. Peace of mind and the clear focus of the heart upon what is ... all are but a breath away. These are gifts freely given to us by God...lavishly.
All we need to do is receive.
Of course, we may need to learn how to practice ways to be receptive. Our lifestyle challenges and even contradicts our desire to be in the space of stillness. If we aren't multitasking we are inadequate...at least in some circles. In that regard, the increasingly popular notion of meditation and contemplation may be "new" to folks in this part of the world.
But God's invitation to Be Still has been uttered throughout time. It's not new.... But groundbreaking? Yes... because the surface of life (what we call reality) is shattered as we reach out in prayer and grasp the firm hand which guides us through each day. It is about stepping away from the distractions of the world's busy-ness (including the chattering of our own minds) and presenting ourselves to the vast, loving, peaceful heart of God.
*********
I've offered this suggestion before....but repetition is often a good thing. Try this meditation on Psalm 46:10.
Settle yourself...(sitting, standing, reclining or even walking slowly)... commit at least 5 minutes to being before God.
(Inhale and exhale slowly)
Be still and know that I am God.
(Inhale and exhale slowly)
Be still and know that I am.
(Inhale and exhale slowly)
Be still and know.
(Inhale and exhale slowly)
Be still.
(Inhale and exhale slowly)
Be.
