Ephesians 4:14-16
We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.
One of my loved ones recently suffered a fairly common athletic injury: Torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).
The first week she was almost totally immobilized. Now, several weeks later, with the help of a knee brace and greater mindfulness about every step she takes, she is once again on the move (in terms of walking). But since she is an athlete, and since she wants to resume FULL life, she will schedule surgery to repair the tear. After all, without the repair, she will have significantly diminished stability and resiliance in that knee. Sudden turns, stops and starts will take her down without the versatility provided by a healthy and whole ligament. In order for the knee to serve its full purpose, --the ligament at its center must be whole.
As we grow (mature) in faith, we are continually knitted together in a way that enables us to function with stability. We can be flexible...resiliant... We are equipped to face life's changes and jolts without collapsing.
One quality of the "ligament" at the center of all that we do and all that we are is "truth". Truth spoken to one another in love serves as both a support and and a stabilizing power. When we hear the truth, we can move freely and with great vigor through winds of change. We are sustained...rooted...anchored in truth in a way that protects us from deceit and deception.
Oh...and another tidbit about the ACL: along with another ligament, (PCL), it forms a cross!
