Imprinting

In 1873 a biologist named D.A. Spalding discovered that newly hatched chicks follow the first moving object they see.  He called this behavior "imprinting", and speculated that this "following instinct" was integral to survival.  In most cases the chicks fixated upon their mother, who would lead them to food and safety.

Another use of the term "imprint": a permanent engraving of an image upon material of any kind, or a fixation upon a particular idea or memory.

In both cases, "imprinting" describes a process that creates a likeness.  Characteristics and patterns are given that reflect the source of the impression.  Given those thoughts, read today's scripture passage:

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.  Hebrews 1:1-4

Consider your baptism.  Because you are baptized you are in Christ.  Therefore, you, too  have been imprinted by God.  At that moment you were infused with a desire to follow the one who leads to eternal life.  Your mind is transformed, with the knowledge of God's Love, unleashed in Christ and sustained by the Holy Spirit.

It is natural, and even crucial to survival, to trust the deeply rooted desire God has placed within and about you.  Follow.  Your day will be wonder-filled.  You will have all that you need.  You will participate in God's hope for you and for all of creation.
