The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet.
The vibrating earth and the patterns of wind and waves have reminded us all too well that a movement in one place will cause all sorts of "after effects" that are miles from the initial center of motion. Earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have generated afterwaves of damage to life and property. Indeed, the world sat for much of last weekend wondering if the Pacific's waves would grow to monstrous proportion. Now some scientists say that last week's earth quake has literally changed the entire Earth's pattern of rotation because the quake shifted the axis of the planet! Wow!
It is clear that when something tragic the subsequent outward flow of pain and grief can generate an equal proportion of love and compassion...and deeper appreciation for those times when we are in some way delivered from natural disasters. We've seen that in the days following almost every tragedy. The human spirit is compelled to move from death to life...from breaking down to building up.
Why is that? Well...at the deepest level, hope and love abide, because of the waves generated by the monumental jolt of God's love and grace that intersected human history over 2000 years.
The reality that Jesus walked the earth is still sending out aftershocks of sacrificial love and the promise of eternal life. No other person who has lived has EVER had such a lasting and profound effect on human existence. We may not always transmit His news accurately...but the power of the gospel continues to ring true in hearts. With Christ at the center our "world" shifts dramatically...we think, speak and act with a different center of gravity that moves us in His direction and at His pace.
Every day Christ whispers the words of love, mercy, and forgiveness that resonate and reverberate...
Particularly during these days of Lent we are called to walk with Christ to the cross, the epicenter of the love that quakes our hearts, minds and our lives...eternally.
Where are you feeling the aftershocks and afterwaves of Christ in your life? How are you "shifting" deep within? How are your relationships or attitudes or personal choices being re-formed? There may be pain involved, of course. But the ultimate after effect is His Love unleashed in You!
