The Meaning of our Lenten Pilgrimage

I have many opportunities to speak with others about the double edged sword of setting aside time and space to reflect upon what it means to be with the Lord in the barren places.

It is most the beautiful invitation: The Lord says "come with me...I am with you always". Yet, it is the most frightening invitation, for as we are with Him He will take us to time and spaces that we most likely wouldn't visit on our own. He takes us to the place of deep pain...and yet just beyond our deepest pain is the promise of God's wholeness...the new vision...the fresh blossom of new life.

The world may speak of places that are not meant for the "weak of heart". Rationality and common sense says we should prepare well for those places or not venture there at all. The Lenten places are FOR the "broken hearted. Lent is FOR the "weak and wounded" places we try to ignore or cover up with our images of strength and stamina.

Lent is about discovering God's love meeting us in those places...ever so gradually walking WITH us from death to life.
