"Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight; and as he approached to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 'I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look. Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. I have surely seen the mistreatment of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Come now, I will send you to Egypt.'"
Years ago I was at a spiritual direction training session where the point of discussion was holy ground. We generated a verbal collage of qualities and characteristics of "being" on holy ground. Words like: frightening, but compelling... dynamic.... aligning.... all encompassing .... awe-filled .... ultimately clarifying ...
We agreed that there are times when you reach places in life's path where there is no possibility of turning back. You may experience a time when you are compelled to stand still in thought or deed for a while....even to the point of being "paralyzed" before the threshold of the unknown. But at the same time, there is profound awareness that you WILL move forward. "Something" albeit an unknown "something" is activating your sense of purpose and your wonder about what is approaching.
The children of God have learned that the "something" that approaches is the directive of the Lord.
When on Holy Ground we do well to follow the pattern of Moses. We are told to "take off the sandals from our feet".... Step out of the things that you have "put on" as protection and security. Stand barefoot, even naked, before the Lord and your "marching orders" will be given. And along with the marching orders you will be given by God all that you need to proceed...even down to something as basic as the shoes on your feet.
Oh... by the way... The shoes you may be told to put on next may be different from the ones of your previous days.... They may be someone else's... or they may be ones that are not of your preference.... but they will fit, for they have been given to you while on Holy Ground.
