Have you ever ended a telephone conversation by simply "hanging up"? Or have you been on the receiving end of such abruptness? Most of us have been subjected to dropped calls...especially with cell phones. When conversation is aborted it leaves a void -- a gap. The urgency with which the connection is reestablished is usually dictated by the level of interest in the subject and the desire to establish harmonious relationship with the party on the other side of the conversation.
The discipline of reading scripture daily and dwelling in the presence of God sustains the conversation between divine, loving wisdom and me...the child of God. At times I fall into a pace of thought or activity where I focus upon something or somebody other than what Christ would have me see. That span of time is like the void of a "dropped connection".
In today's reading from 2Timothy 2:11-13 we are reminded of the part we play in connecting to God.
If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he will also deny us;
if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.
God's presence is constant, but will not be forced upon us. God is always calling, and always has been, but I must do my part of "picking up" the call. If the connection to God seems vague or faulty, I realize that in some way I have dropped the receiver. Since God is always there and is never finished with His divine conversation of love, I have essentially "hung up" on him.
Lord, forgive me for the times I have set aside my part in the holy conversation with you. I give thanks that you remain faithful even in the void of my faithlessness.
Aaaaahhhh.... connection is re-established! Amen.
