From Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
This week's readings draw us into stories of the world's capability (and propensity) for chaos and destruction. I've never been subjected to a raging flood, or a tulmutuous earth quake....but I know first hand the experience of sudden storms.
To be alive means to be subject to the possibility of chaos. Natural disaster, human folly, random accidents, physical or mental illness ... the list of potential trouble that can erupt is endless. To dwell on that list, however, is functional atheism. To linger with that list draws me away from the heart and foundation of safety, which is God.
I'm a realist. I know that life and the world can be dangerous. My awareness of reality compels me to the foundation of trust and faith in God.
I lean into the stillness of the moment. I KNOW that God is within and above and all around everything. No matter what is careening about me...no matter what my body or my mind is experiencing, my soul rests in the center of prayer, nestled in the hand of God, my refuge.
Peace be with you this day....no matter what is unfolding before you!
