Today on "Sacred Space" (link to the left) the writer encourages the reader to "relax into the mystery of being loved by God".
Like any other prayer practice, it is helpful to have some reminders about how our body can serve as a reminder of what is going on while we pray. Gestures, body position, even pace of movement all can serve to focus our attitude. So...some reminders....when you pray, whether you are motionless or active:
Use your mind to acknowledge your intention that "this is prayer".
Notice your body: Feel where your skin is connecting with either clothing or the air. Relax your jaw and your tongue. Relax your hands.... notice how your body is supported (this differs depending upon whether you are sitting, standing, kneeling, reclining or moving about).
Notice the breath being drawn into your body (try focusing upon your abdomen rather than your lungs). Draw the air in, using your abdomen like a bellows.
Be aware of any area of your body that is asking for attention...pain, tension, discomfort...see if you can ask that area to relax a bit more.
Now, envision yourself being completely immersed in God's loving presence...some envision a warm bath, others see themselves floating in amniotic fluid....others bathing in light....try different images.
Be that way as long as you wish....then take some time to reflect upon what it was like to "relax into God". This presence is surrounding you, inviting you, every moment of every day. This presence serves to companion you in all situations, filling your with the peace of Christ. When you notice fear, anxiety or confusion threatening your peace of heart, ease back into God's love!
