This week's Gospel (Luke 24:13-35) invites us to contemplate what is going on as we walk through our days. Each one of us carries thoughts and concerns about our particular situations. Some of us speak openly to others. Some of us carry on internal dialogues. Others walk through life in a haze of unawareness. Regardless of the pace or path of our journey, Jesus approaches us, just as he did in the story of the two walking on the road to Emmaus.
What prevents you from recognizing that Christ is walking with you? What might you do to remind your body and your mind to stand still for a while? It really is a matter of choice...you can choose to pause...or you can scurry on.
As the two on the road to Emmaus stood still, they were deeply and dramatically affected by Christ's presence. This is not about a mental dialogue...it is about standing still and noticing the impact of Christ's presence upon the heart. It is about understanding in your soul the truth about promise and purpose and perspective that goes far beyond the capability of your mind.
Barbara Brown Taylor wrote the following: "Every now and then, if you are really, really lucky, you hear something so right and true that it pierces through all your defenses and goes straight to your heart. It can make you drop to your knees. It can make you laugh until you cry, or cry until you laugh, but it is not a mental thing at all. It is a physical thing that requires a physical response. You have to do something about it; and sometimes you need help figuring out what that is."
Christ approaches you as you walk...pause...stand still...notice the presence and experience the gift of divine companionship. What's going on? How do you respond? Look around you..however you are in all of "this" walking through life, somebody is there to help you figure out what you are to do next.
