Wisdom

I am privileged to serve some of you as your spiritual director. I sit with you and listen to all that you have to say about what you are noticing about God's action in your life. You present information and descriptions. Together we pray about what you say...and often during our time together wisdom emerges. Neither one of us is the source of the wisdom. It emerges as a gift from the prayer that is at the center of our meeting.

I wonder with gratitude at the lavish compassion and mercy of God as wisdom is imparted. Sometimes it showers upon us, sometimes it flashes like a brilliant light. But more often it is given in eyedroppers full... small glimmers that we recognize as hope, clarity, truth and a point of direction.

I am grateful for the merciful drops of wisdom. Perhaps if I saw the entire scope of what God's wisdom will call from my life, I would be paralyzed in doubt or fear. What an amazing love God has that allows me to step along, most of the time, with baby steps.

As I respond in faith, so my faith grows.

Here's something I 'see': if God were to give me 'wisdom' as from a fully opened fire hose, as opposed to a barely opened garden hose....I'd be in big trouble!

It takes time to manage larger and larger gulps. Does God indeed give us no more than we can handle?
