We had a huge snowfall last night. My home (which sits back in a wonderful woods) has over-sized picture windows on three sides of my living room. Well before dawn the interior space was adequately illuminated by the white world outside. Now it is day. The landscape is completely snow covered. Every horizontal or angled branch or twig is covered with several inches of snow. Even the tree trunks are frosted. It is at least 80 percent white out there.
Its not often that the view is 80 percent white. On a day like today the realities of the forest are more clear to me. Each colorful bird "pops" out with that white backdrop. The angles and curves of the trees are defined by the snowy shrouds. I can see individual movement in this "pen and ink" panorama that is not visible on a typical day.
What is usually hidden or camouflaged revealed.
As I gazed at the early morning scene, my mind revisited a program on NPR about "secrets". Frank Warren was inspired a decade ago to invite people to send a postcard to him (anonymously) with a few sentences about a secret they have. The response was astounding. It resulted in a blog, and a TED talk Click here to see the full TED talk.
The basic idea is that we all carry something hidden. We all have thoughts, feelings and experiences that are "secret". Bringing the secrets into the light, even anonymously, allows the keeper of the secret to gaze at the intricacies of what is going on.
The beauty may be enhanced. The tenderness may be embraced. The shame, sorrow, or rage may lose its iron grip on the heart's desire to move towards life, wholeness and peace.
