Never Give Up

I spent a week or so away from the world news, basking in grateful and loving light.  Yesterday I returned to various news sources and found (no surprise) the ominous reminders:

Random accidents happen.  Relationships run astray.  Bodies succumb to physical, mental or emotional breakdown.  Governments malfunction.  Economies flounder and collapse.  Evil erupts.  Natural disasters occur.

Sometimes the contrasts in life emphasize the darker, heavier shades.  People walk in a black cavern that seems to have no exit.  We wander about in groups or in isolation asking, together, "what can we do?"  "how long will this go on?"

Still, today's reading from thousands of years ago reminds me that we of the 21st century are certainly not the only ones who have been threatened be diminishing hope or increasing despair.

In the darkest spaces the most minute sparkle of light can be seen.  It is a glint of hope that would be overlooked if it appeared in the full light of day.

The promise of Advent is that God is always (yes, ALWAYS) present in the darkness.  One flutter of God's love, one whisper of God's word can strike a small, light tone to guide your steps towards all that is life, all that opens the way to hope.

Wait.  Watch.  It is there!

Keep your hands stretched out and your heart open.  You are being guided by God.  There is someone closer than you think!
