As we celebrate Pentecost, the church is reminded of the energy flow which empowers and guides our testimony to Christ's victory over sin and death. With the gift of the Holy Spirit to energize us, all that Jesus taught about life in alignment with God's Will begins to pulse and flow through our words and deeds. Together we stay plugged in to the source as we gather around the Word and the Holy Meal. When we call upon the name of the Lord we enter into a power surge of God's might ... and our words and our deeds are reflections of God's love.
One of my colleagues, Rev. Larry Klinker, has this to say:
Pentecost is important to celebrate because the disciples of Jesus move from being the student learners of Jesus we call disciples and become apostles...those who are sent. There is a shift from being a learner of Jesus as a disciple (who is dependent upon his external teachings) to being an apostle (the one sent) who becomes dependent on the internal resources of the presence of the Spirit in our lives. It’s the difference from being extra-dependent, meaning dependent on something outside ourselves like the teachings of Jesus, to becoming intra-dependent meaning we are dependent on something within our lives like the Holy Spirit within our hearts that teaches us from within.
Because we have been given the Holy Spirit we are called to use our voices to tell the world the mighty deeds of God. It means that we are freed from preoccupation with the limitations of what humans can accomplish...and in that freedom we soar in the faith! Rooted firmly in God through prayer, we are guided by the Holy Spirit. We are given limitless words and actions that proclaim Christ to others.
Sometimes we forget how powerful the church is. We fret and fuss about trivial matters, when we are called to might and transformative love.
Well, I don't know about you, but I trust the Holy Spirit to be surging through every cell of the Body of Christ this weekend as we sing and pray, "Come, Holy Spirit"!
Each one of us is be empowered by the Holy Spirit enlivening us and teaching us from deep within. Fear not, you don't need a surge protector -- for the same one who stirs you up also guides you and counsels you and walks with you -- always!
Amen! Come Holy Spirit!
