Today's passage from Proverbs outlines some common sense knowledge. One wouldn't argue about most of it.
But then there's that difficulty again that has been facing us for days in scripture: Love your enemies!
Slap on the cheek, turn the other.
If told to give away your coat, give away your under armor as well!
When commanded to carry another's burdens one mile, don't stop at the mile marker. Keep going!
Passive, yet powerful resistance to one whose intentions would be to oppress you in some way. But not easy, not even in families.
I couldn't help but think of a time when a particularly difficult member of my family had managed to say and do just enough things so that, most of the time, I either avoided that person or cowered in her presence.
I went to my pastor and described her behavior, which he confirmed was actually quite sick and mean spirited. (that felt good) However, when I asked: "So what am I to do?", the pastor smiled mischievously and said: "Oh, it's so simple. Love her beyond measure, with love and humility oozing out of your eyes!" (that took me down several notches)
Then he winked at me and said: "It's been proven. You will drive her absolutely nuts, wondering what is motivating you. Then you will have a chance to proclaim Christ in some way!"
Hmmmm... is that what the Wise Guy from Proverbs meant about piling coals on the head of the enemy?
