A sign of true greatness is gratitude.
I can think of no magnificent deed that is accomplished in isolation. Although a soloist may perform with no accompaniment, she brings every coach and instructor that massaged her art to the stage or concert hall. When applause and accolades begin to mount, the true artist will bow and gesture in a way that expresses gratitude for everything that needed to happen for his performance to be stellar.
Jesus acknowledges the importance of John the Baptist in his own unfolding ministry. Although John would not accomplish the miracles that were revealed in Christ, John's proclamation and service tilled the world's soil in preparation for the inbreaking of the kingdom. John introduced the hearts of people to the future, awakening the hope and the expectation of their souls. Who knows.... if John hadn't been crying out in the wilderness, drawing folks together around the promises of God, would Jesus' ministry have developed in a different pattern? Maybe.... maybe not. The point here is that as Jesus' power was about to eclipse John and move the Baptist out of the limelight, Jesus lifts up John in praise, saying, essentially ... "This man has been a critical piece leading up to what I am going to do."
Do you have something that you are skilled at doing? Have you accomplished something that has been rewarding? When somebody praises or affirms you, are there folks who have contributed to your development who deserve your gratitude?
