Primal Song

Years ago (around the 1970's) there was a popular therapeutic tactic that involved, literally, a primal scream.  Essentially,  it worked by revisiting nodal, or formative, moments and conversations that pierced and wounded the patient.   At the point of greatest vulnerability and abandonment, the client was encouraged to let loose with a scream or with vigorous tears, thereby releasing the repressed pain.  Life could then progress in a healthier pattern.  The root of the pain, recognized and named, lost its power to poison emotional or relational functioning (hopefully) when brought into awareness.

This primal therapy came to mind as I read today's lesson from Galatians.  As I nestle in my comfortable living room praying, and reflecting, my heart begins to sing the song of faith.   The words and effervescing sensation of the song is not unique to this 21st century believer.  The hope and joy and trust at its core is radiating from a place that is primal to the children of God.  The song tells about the promises of God revealed to me through the Holy Spirit.

I am aware that this song goes all the way back to Abraham! It is as if time and space and history open up, attracting me all the way back to the glowing core of that faithful fellow's words and actions.

That primal song is intersecting with you right now, I am convinced.... otherwise you wouldn't be bothering with a blog like this.......   Can you hear it? How might that song inspire and enliven you today?
