I've been here for decades, says the man. I have waited in this place and watched all the others come and go... I look at them all living the good life, doing their thing and the most I can do is sit there and say: "Hey, what about me?"
Then somebody came along and whispered words of encouragement...
Jesus said to the man: "what about you? there is hope for your peace and wholeness. You can be different...healed from the pain and suffering that incarcerates you. The way you are right now is not the way you must always be...."
Jesus asked: "Do you want to be made well?"
The man rattled off the laundry list of justification for his pain...the finger of blame moving from one situation or person to the next...the many times "others" didn't do whatever needed to happen for things to be right for the man.
Then he heard the words: "Take up your mat and walk"
And the man did...
I would guess that the man's limbs, and mind, and imagination were stiff and sluggish from all the decades of immobility. But I would imagine that the flood of pent up hopes and dreams and ideas of what might be possible was quite forceful, once the man got moving. That is what healing is all about...new life, new ways of being.
Once you hear the voice of God saying: "You can be whole...trust me..." your life will never be the same
Now get up and walk!
Where have you been lying around, waiting for something to happen to make things different? In what ways do you need to stop looking for others to make things right for you? Sometimes you just need to get up and walk!
