Green Blades Rising

Have you gone for a hike lately? There's a magnificent chorus underway...

The trees have not yet burst into foliage, but the understory is lavish with green blades and wild flowers. They will only be with us for a short while... the spring beauties, anemones, bloodroot, trout lilies, wild ginger, violets, May apples.

I pause before one of my favorite sights...somehow, some way, a brilliant green blade has burst through the plaster of last year's leaves which have been flattened and pressed by the weight of winter. It is a holy place there, where the new life invites me to remember that the green blade of hope and new life is making its way upward and outward from previous things in our families and community.

Where do you see the tips of newness bursting through regions which have been pressed down, flattened by the weight of pain, brokenness, sorrow? You may not see it yet, but I know with my whole heart that there is absolutely no place where God isn't actively at work. His voice still speaks mightily....behold, I am doing new things and am making all things new!

I continue to walk the forest path...and I am reminded of the encouraging words: the woods would be a silent place if only the birds who sing well sang! So I allow my voice to join the chorus of all creation... Now the green blade rises....

When our hearts are saddened, grieving or in pain,
By your touch you call us back to life again;
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
