But we continue to wait.
I recall the words from the Taize Chant:
Wait for the Lord, Whose day is near.
Wait for the Lord, Keep Watch, Take Heart.
I can imagine people who are apart from the community of faith asking: Well, what are you waiting for?
If somebody approached you asking about the reason for this Advent Waiting, how would you respond? How would you describe the "day of the Lord"? Read Isaiah's description:
Isaiah 35: 3-7
Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
‘Be strong, do not fear!
Here is your God.
He will come with vengeance,
with terrible recompense.
He will come and save you.’
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
Together we are waiting for the outbreaking of God's justice. In God's actions there is sight, and hearing, and walking and voice where people were previously blind, deaf, lame or mute. This lavish healing will be showered on all people, beginning with you.
Where are YOU blind....or deaf...or lame...or unable to speak? Ask the same questions of your family...or the congregation.
Wait for the Lord!
