The Voice

The same voice that spoke light into existence in Genesis 1 or that stirs oceans and trees in Psalm 29 is the voice that graced and blessed Jesus at the moment of his baptism. That same voice spoke through the sacrament of Baptism when you were baptized -- most likely, many years ago.

It is beyond our understanding or even our imagination to envision the "sound" of the voice. We can't begin to imitate the sound that would be made by a voice that would stir an ocean or that would compel new life to sprout from a seemingly dead landscape. And how can we grasp an inkling of a message that would be imparted to us in the deepest region of our being -- a message that identifies us as somebody precious, and wondrously made.... somebody loved "in particular" by the creator of the universe.

This voice is communicated to us through Jesus...the first one to hear "you are my beloved son". Because God spoke to Jesus, and because Jesus lived and died to assure our status as children of God, we too, each of us, can hear the Lord say: You are my precious daughter or son.

No wonder we remember our baptism! No wonder we stand in awe of the voice that addressed humankind in Christ at the moment of His baptism. We can't describe the sound of that voice...and we can't fully understand what is unleashed at the moment of our baptism. But we know that it is the power of unlimited love...creativity...and possibility.

I pray that as you open your heart to the mystery of baptism that you trust the claim God placed upon you and your life when He claimed you as one of his baptized children.

Amen.
