Read Psalm 19.
The scope of the psalm is both cosmic and intimate. It carries us from the farthest stars in the universe into the deepest aspects of our being--the space where our thoughts and words stir in meditation.
On one level the images of creation (sun, moon, wind, stars) create a sensation similar to sitting in an IMAX theater. Flashes of light, gusts of wind, rushes of meteors all speak of God. The fact that there is rarely a collision (relatively speaking) is, indeed a miracle of creation and order.
On another level the verses envelop me in a tug of war between human will and God's law. I am reminded that without the basic precepts that guide the relationships with God and with others each one of us has the capacity to wreak havoc on creation and all creatures -- daily.
Then I am drawn to one of the main battle zones where good and evil meet (more frequently than I care to admit). Somewhere deep within me (call it the heart for simplicity's sake) there is a dance occurring between what I would do for myself and what I could do to glorify God and serve others.
So I pray that the words of the mouth AND the meditations of my heart are acceptable to God, my rock and my redeemer. I offer all of my existence and ask that it be in alignment with God's majestic order for creation. I place what I might think, say or do in God's hand and ask God's help in shaping it so that, at the end of the day, I have done no harm.
