Perseverance

Thomas Kinkade is an artist whose pictures emphasize the play of light and darkness. Whether it is a landscape or a seascape, the vista he paints reveals and indeed relies upon the presence of darkness to enhance the power and beauty of light. His picture, "Perseverance" (above) invites further meditation upon the Gospel Lesson in yesterday's posting.

Take any challenging situation facing you today and place it in the context of Kinkade's painting. What aspect of the painting speaks most clearly to where YOU are in the midst of the situation? Perhaps you are in the boat...tossed about. Or, you may relate to the idea of actually being in the sea, buffeted by the waves. You may also be discovering some light breaking through the situation...aaahhh...the return to safe seas, peaceful harbor.

The artist writes the following about his painting:

In "Perseverance;" thunder crashes, sails billow, waves toss the fragile boat. We see that the clouds are about to break. The sea will calm; the sailor's perseverance will soon be rewarded by a return to God's safe heaven. Perhaps this painting can assure each of us that if we can simply persevere, God's hand of love will soon disperse each storm. — Thomas Kinkade
