Personal watering systems are part of the equipment of anybody on the move – just take a look at folks who are hiking, working out, biking. We are almost always assured that we will never become parched…our tongues will never be swollen with the need for a sip of cool water.
Water is essential to life—it is more than a pleasure or self-indulgence. We know that a body can exist without food, at least for a while. But without water, the body can’t efficiently function. Without water the body poisons itself, and the mind misfires.
Jesus reminds us in John 4 about living water that quenches the deepest thirst. The reality is that without regular sips from the well of Christ’s presence and counsel, we risk a spiritual drought. The soil of the spiritual life hardens, and is incapable of fruitful produce. Our responsiveness and acuity become distorted. We are spiritually “addled”, like a mind that is suffering from dehydration.
Return to the water of eternal life in Christ…the cool, clear flow of love, truth, peace, hope and counsel of the triune God.
May we all linger in the living water that flows lavishly and without interruption in Christ.

Amazingly, we Samaritans gathered at the well are all offered the living water, a comfort I find beyond any words.
