Attending to God's call

On Saturday I participated in a Synod Event, "Calling all the Called". The purpose of the gathering was to welcome people who are curious about public ministry in the church as well as to support people who are currently engaged in the process of candidacy.

It is uplifting and humbling to be in the presence of people whose ears have heard God's voice prompting them to say "here I am...I am willing to follow where you lead. Use my gifts according to your purpose." Their feeling of joy sometimes blends with apprehension, for God is always calling us to something beyond the scope of our limited vision. Time after time, person after person tells of experiences where life has changed in amazing and dramatic ways when God is allowed to utilize our physical, intellectual and emotional energy. Values and priorities change...what used to be critical or what seemed to be a non-negotiable goal may recede, giving room for something previously hidden from awareness.

God is calling each believer all the time. Call is not limited to those who say "yes" to serving the church in some professional capacity. Even as you read this, God is calling you to the next step on God's chosen path for your life. It is not always easy to sort through the menu of possibilities, but I can assure you that God's call always involves something loving, truthful and compassionate. Even if your day is providing opportunities primarily for rest, recreation and renewal, (after all, many of us are on vacation at this time of year...) remember that it is a gift from God which in some way is intended to enhance your ability to love and live more fully for the sake of somebody else.

Attending to God's call is a lifelong process. Incline your ear....open your heart...respond with trust that wherever God leads you, you will walk in the presence of divine love, strength and safety.
